In the limelight with Kareem
Kareem L. Michel, a highly esteemed street photographer based in New York City, embodies the spirit of an all-around adventure enthusiast. His passion for capturing the raw and authentic essence of street life brings him immense joy and fulfillment. While photography is his creative outlet, Kareem also demonstrates remarkable versatility and dedication by working as a diligent Mail Handler at the United States Postal Service during the day.
Kareem’s love for photography blossomed during a challenging time in his life. It became a source of solace and an avenue for self-expression, allowing him to perceive the world in a new light, as if through a third eye that reveals hidden beauty and untold stories. Inspired by photographers such as Jared Polin, Joe Greer, Joel Meyerowitz, Jamel Shabazz, Steven John Irby, and many others, their work continues to fuel and drive Kareem’s photography.
In the summer of 2019, Kareem had the privilege of being an intern photographer under the mentorship of Whitney Hu and Xamayla Rose. Xamayla, a former City Council candidate who currently holds the esteemed position of New York City Deputy Public Advocate position in the 45th District, played a pivotal role in Kareem’s growth as a photographer. Whitney, who previously managed Xamayla’s campaign, is a multifaceted individual with diverse roles, including director of civic engagement and research at @cuffh • an organizer at @southbrooklynmutualaid • publications board chair at @feministpress • and abolitionist.

In the limelight with Victoria
Practicing the art of photography takes perseverance and capability but also a journey of growth. Observing my uncle's techniques year by year, I could barely touch the areas I work in now.
Initially, I was limited to using an iPod Touch when I was just eight years old. I was unable to capture street photos, which deeply disappointed me, leading to a temporary halt in the process.
However, my passion for photography began after acquiring a 3rd generation iPhone SE. Finally, I was equipped to capture street photos and resume exploring my surroundings.
With the relentless support of my family and my beloved Canon EOS R6 camera, gifted to me by my uncle for my birthday, I continue to refine and enhance my photography skills.
